The entire Yellow Mimosa staff would like to congratulate our new site editor, Oksana Petrichenko. We are sure she will bring new ways to share her life long love of International Women’s Day with all of you. Where we go from here is totally in her hands. We look forward to her loving guidance and continued commitment to promoting this celebration.
International Women’s Day (8 March) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, IWD is a national holiday. The first IWD was run in 1911. Next year is IWD Global Centenary 1911-2011.
The tradition is to give women flowers on this holiday. In Russia, Mimosa is the flower of choice for the Women’s day and it is customary to present women with yellow mimosas. Mimosa’s bright yellow color is a symbol of vitality, joy, wisdom and warmth. On March 8, it is common to give flowers not only to women in your family, but also to friends, co-workers, neighbors, and business partners.
